On Monday, Estonia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that it had summoned the chargé d’affaires from the Russian Embassy to express its protest over a breach of its airspace by a Russian helicopter.
The Russian MI-8 helicopter crossed into the airspace of the Baltic nation on Sunday, close to Vaindloo Island in the Gulf of Finland.
Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna described the occurrence as “another serious and unfortunate incident.”
He noted on platform X that “this marks the third such occurrence this year” for Estonia, which is a NATO and EU member sharing a border with Russia, a staunch supporter of Ukraine.
The Estonian Defence Forces reported that the helicopter was in their airspace for approximately four minutes without establishing contact with air traffic control.
The aircraft lacked a flight plan, had its transponder deactivated, and failed to communicate with Estonian air traffic control.
Comparable violations also took place on May 13 and June 22.
