“Being out on the water is truly remarkable; the tranquility it brings fills you with joy.”
Ruhana Ali is a member of Oar and Explore, an all-female boating club that operates on the Limehouse Cut, which is the oldest canal in London.
The east London club comprises over 120 women, primarily from Muslim and global majority backgrounds, and it originally started as a pilot program two years ago.
“What stands out about this boat club is the diversity of women—we have members of all sizes dressed in whatever makes them feel comfortable as they enjoy their time on the water,” Ms. Ali remarked.
She continued, “What’s so wonderful about our community and London itself is that it allows you to explore new and sometimes unconventional activities while having a great time.”
“When we’re out on the water, we see waves and curious gazes directed our way, as if to ask, ‘What are these unique ladies up to?’ But we always respond with a wave and a friendly hello.”
“It truly lifts our spirits when we’re on the water. It’s a delightful experience that we can share together.”
Babu Bhattacherjee, the director of communities and neighborhoods at the Poplar HARCA housing association, noted that these women are “reclaiming the water.”
He commented, “East London is home to beautiful spaces, but over the years, some have become less inviting and raised safety concerns. It’s fantastic to collaborate with local women to create an enjoyable environment that fosters community and encourages the use of these wonderful aquatic spaces in London.”
