Camdens Creative Revolution: Plans for World-Class Film Studios Spark Diverse Reactions

Residents of London may soon witness the emergence of modern film and television studios as developers unveil their vision to transform an industrial site in north London into a “world-class” creative hub.

Camden Film Quarter has proposed plans to establish advanced production studios in Kentish Town, accompanied by new affordable housing, public spaces, and educational facilities.

The company aims to create a pioneering film studios district in the city centre, leveraging Camden’s rich creative talent and creating new opportunities for the local community.

While Camden Council approved the master plan for this project in March, the recent proposal has received a mixed reaction from nearby residents.

Some community members have expressed their discontent with the plans, arguing that the residential buildings are being “crammed into” one corner of the development area, with concerns that homes would be “negatively impacted” by the adjacent studios.

Others have criticized the proposed heights of the towers as being “excessive” or entirely inappropriate.

Local resident Eileen Sullivan shared her initial excitement regarding the film studio proposal but is now “appalled” to see social housing plans near a recycling centre.

“That’s an incredibly poor idea,” she commented.

A number of residents are calling on the council to extend the public feedback period, asserting that the current deadline of December 14 is too soon for adequate community input.

Camden Film Quarter is supported by investment firm Yoo Capital, which acquired the Regis Road site between Kentish Town Tube station and Grafton Road in 2023.

Yoo Capital is also involved in the redevelopment of the area beneath Shepherd’s Bush Market, the Kensington Olympia, and recently received approval for a project to transform the Shaftesbury Theatre into a new hotel for Soho and a permanent location for Cirque du Soleil.

The master plan additionally includes plans for new educational centers for the National Film and Television School and the London Screen Academy.

If planning permission is secured, the developers project that this regeneration effort will create 1,370 jobs in the area during the three-year construction phase.

Camden residents are invited to share their views about the proposal on the council’s planning portal.
