Transforming Sound into Sight: Londons 11 Million Dots Merges Community Voices with Data-Driven Art

The largest community-driven public art installation in London has been revealed in West London.

Titled *11 Million Dots* and conceived by artist Rafael El Baz, this expansive artwork covers an area of 2,700 square meters (29,000 sq ft) across the six-story exterior of a newly constructed data center located near Park Royal in Ealing.

El Baz collected ambient sounds and noise from the neighborhood, alongside over 120 audio interviews with local residents and business owners. He subsequently transformed these recordings into binary code and audio waveforms.

These elements were then imprinted onto aluminum panels to visualize what data—commonly utilized yet seldom represented—can embody when abstracted in time, according to El Baz.

“My work focuses on materiality, sustainability, and the waste streams that lead us to undervalue certain materials and, by extension, stories,” he explained.

“This project transforms the untold narratives of individuals into something that is sustainable.”

This installation is featured as part of London’s Design Festival.

Justine Simons, London’s deputy mayor for culture and the creative industries, remarked, “Public art breathes life into our city, igniting discussions, celebrating diversity, and fostering community connections; *11 Million Dots* achieves all of this and more.

“A data center in Acton and Park Royal has been enhanced with this breathtaking installation, drawing abstract patterns directly from conversations with locals and their surroundings, including clouds, trees, and traffic.”
