Liverpool Street Station will experience an eight-day closure starting on Christmas Day and ending on New Year’s Day to facilitate necessary roof repairs, according to Network Rail.

Travelers during the festive season are advised to review their journey plans when passing through the UK’s busiest station.

Additionally, structural improvements will be made within the Bishopsgate Tunnel leading to London Liverpool Street, along with upgrades to the signaling system throughout Cambridgeshire.

Normal train services will resume from the station on January 2, as stated by Network Rail.

The engineering activities in Cambridgeshire will commence on Christmas Day and span up to 11 days, aiming to advance the second phase of the Cambridge re-signalling initiative and modernize the network’s infrastructure.

Signaling specialists will implement a new control system to manage the signals along the railway stretch between Cambridge North and Audley End.

According to Network Rail, “A contemporary digital workstation will replace the outdated 40-year-old signaling panel at the Cambridge signaling center, enabling signallers to supervise the network’s operations with greater efficiency.”

“This effort is crucial for the timely opening of the new Cambridge South station in early January.”

Furthermore, an enhancement to the Meldreth Road level crossing in Cambridgeshire will introduce a full barrier CCTV oversight system.

Between December 27 and January 4, 2026, train services will be halted between Royston and Stansted Mountfitchet, as well as between Cambridge and Cambridge North.

Rail services between Cambridge and Bury St Edmunds will also be disrupted during this period, with bus replacement services operational from Friday, December 27.

As the body responsible for railway infrastructure, Network Rail has announced that no train services will be available on Christmas Day and Boxing Day, and that some routes will see early closures on Christmas Eve.

Starting December 27, Greater Anglia services on the Great Eastern and West Anglia main lines will operate to and from Stratford, including Stansted Express services.

On Boxing Day, the Stansted Express will run a modified service to and from Tottenham Hale.

Due to engineering work, services to Norwich, Ipswich, Clacton-on-Sea, and Braintree will operate to and from Witham, with bus connections available between Witham and Billericay to link with train services between Billericay and Stratford.

The ongoing works at London Liverpool Street will include the reinforcement of the Bishopsgate tunnel, which involves installing steel support girders and repairing existing structures to combat corrosion.

In addition, roof panels in the station concourse will be replaced to enhance natural light, upgrade the drainage system, and renew seals “to fortify the roof against increasingly frequent and severe storms,” as noted by Network Rail.

New ticket gates for platforms one to ten will also be installed.
