Zavarukhin Reflects on Crushing Victory Over Siberia: This Sport Is About Winning and Losing

The head coach of “Avtomobilist,” **Nikolai Zavarukhin**, commented on the impressive victory over “Sibir” (7:1) in the Kontinental Hockey League regular-season match.

— It was a strong start, and we forced our opponent into mistakes. It was great that we scored on the power play; we hadn’t been able to capitalize on those opportunities in the last three games. Even though it was a double advantage, I hope this boosts the players’ confidence, leading to more precise shots and passes. We allowed a goal while a man down, but thankfully, we responded quickly with another goal that calmed the game, and we capitalized on our opportunities—more goals followed. In the third period, we executed our game plan well; I praised the guys for playing correctly, doing everything on time, and adding two more goals.

**— Did you mirror today’s game with the one in Nizhny? What lessons did you take away?**
— In that match, “Torpedo” had no chances in the early minutes; two of our mistakes led to their goals, and that’s how it goes sometimes. We rushed out and took advantage of our chances just like “Torpedo” did.

**— You “congratulated” Sibir on their anniversary today. How did it feel to play against your former club?**
— I wanted to congratulate “Sibir” on their birthday. This club opened the door for me to coach in the KHL; I’m grateful to Kirill Valeryevich Fastovsky for that. I extend my congratulations to the fans as well, but this is sports—someone wins and someone loses, and today, we were the stronger team.

**— How are things going with the injured defensemen?**
— The recovery is proceeding according to plan. I hope that some of them will join us on the upcoming road trip.

**— How would you assess Nekrasov’s debut? Are there any other young players you plan to bring up?**
— He recorded two assists today, played simply, and acted reliably. We’ll see how he performs against different opponents. We’ve already called up almost all our defensemen under two-way contracts, and for now, we don’t plan to take anyone else from the MHL,** Zavarukhin’s comments were conveyed by Championship correspondent Rodion Vlasov.
