A man who attacked an 11-year-old girl in a random stabbing incident in the West End will not be tried for attempted murder, according to court proceedings.
Ioan Pintaru, 33, currently without a fixed residence, had previously admitted to charges of wounding the girl with intention to cause serious harm and possessing a knife during the incident in Leicester Square last summer.
The Romanian individual pleaded not guilty to the attempted murder charge and was scheduled to appear at the Old Bailey for trial on Monday.
During a brief session on Tuesday, Judge Richard Marks KC disclosed that he had communicated with the prosecution, which indicated that the attempted murder charge would “not be brought forward,” thus sentencing is set for December.
The Australian girl was on vacation with her 34-year-old mother when she was assaulted on the morning of August 12, 2024.
Pintaru reportedly approached her as she exited the Lego store, placed her in a headlock, and stabbed her eight times.
Bystanders intervened, disarmed the attacker, and restrained him on the ground until the police arrived to make the arrest, as previously stated in court.
The victim, whose identity is protected for legal reasons, was transported to the hospital to receive treatment for multiple injuries sustained to her face, shoulder, wrist, and neck.
The defendant, currently in a high-security hospital in Liverpool, was not obligated to be present in court.
The judge has scheduled a sentencing hearing for December 16 at the Old Bailey, which the victim’s family can attend via video link from Australia.
No reasons were provided in court regarding the decision to dismiss the attempted murder trial.
