Massive £100m Revitalization of Alton Estate Approved by Residents, Paving Way for New Homes and Community Enhancements

Residents have expressed strong support for a £100m initiative aimed at revitalizing one of the largest housing estates in south-west London.

A vote conducted by Wandsworth Council revealed that 82% of over 1,400 participants endorsed the redevelopment plans for the Alton Estate in Roehampton.

The initiative proposes the demolition of 177 existing homes and the construction of up to 650 new dwellings, with 57% intended as affordable housing. Additionally, the project will introduce new community amenities, a public square, outdoor areas, and retail spaces.

This ballot result comes after more than ten years of uncertainty for residents since the council initially approved the regeneration in 2012.

Following its acquisition of Wandsworth Council in 2022, Labour abandoned the prior plan approved by the Conservatives due to concerns regarding affordability and instead developed a new master plan through discussions with the residents.

Aydin Dikerdem, the council’s cabinet member for housing, shared with the Local Democracy Reporting Service (LDRS): “The primary challenge with the Alton renewal was that residents had been promised change for such a long time that many had lost faith in the council’s intentions.”

“The toughest part was convincing people that we were genuinely committed to letting them have a meaningful input and ownership in the process.”

According to the council, this ballot, facilitated by Civica from September 22 to October 16, marks the largest they have ever managed.

In line with initial improvements, the council has launched a family hub, created murals, repaved roads, and expanded a community minibus service.

An additional proposal for a new library, youth club, council offices, community areas, and 40 council homes at the estate’s entrance is being expedited.

“For far too long, this estate has been neglected in terms of investment,” Mr. Dikerdem remarked.

“Now, we have a definitive choice from the local residents that they desire genuine transformation, and we are dedicated to making that happen.”

Putney MP Fleur Anderson praised the outcome, commenting: “Alton residents have long awaited the necessary investment. The ‘yes’ vote clearly signifies the community’s desire for change – including new homes, improved health services, modern community areas, and a revitalized shopping district.”
