Ksenia Sobchak Removes Interview With Gay Artist Following Roskomnadzors Warning on LGBT Propaganda

Media figure Ksenia Sobchak announced on Wednesday that she removed a recent interview from her well-known YouTube channel after receiving a warning from Russia’s state media authority, which indicated that the content may have included elements of “LGBT propaganda.”

The interview, released in early September, featured openly gay Russian-born artist and blogger Sergei Grigoryev-Apollonov, who is better known by his artistic name, Grey Wiese.

During the discussion, the 44-year-old Paris-based musician talked about experiences with homophobia in his home region of Saratov and shared insights about his life in Europe.

In her Telegram message regarding the “forced removal” of the interview, Sobchak included the warning from the Russian regulator Roskomnadzor, expressing regret but asserting the necessity to adhere to Russian laws. The specific elements that were flagged were not clarified.

This incident follows the ruling by the Russian Supreme Court in November 2023, which labeled the so-called “international LGBT movement” as an extremist organization, paving the way for stringent measures against LGBT-related expressions.

“There are currently very few enforcement actions under this law as it pertains to media, and legal interpretations vary significantly,” Sobchak noted.

While the complete interview is no longer accessible on Sobchak’s YouTube channel, several short clips featuring Grigoryev-Apollonov were still available as of Wednesday evening.

In subsequent remarks to the exiled media outlet TV Rain, Grigoryev-Apollonov expressed astonishment that the interview was initially published, but he countered the assertion that it was propaganda.

With 1.5 million followers on Instagram, Grigoryev-Apollonov is related to pop singer Andrei Grigoryev-Apollonov from the group Ivanushki International, which gained fame in the late 1990s. His work predominantly revolves around music and his personal life, rather than political issues.

Witkoff and Putin Will Meet Tuesday Afternoon to Discuss U.S. Peace Plan Текст: President Vladimir Putin will meet with U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff in Moscow on Tuesday afternoon to discuss the Trump administration’s latest proposal to end the war in Ukraine, the Kremlin said. “The meeting with Witkoff is planned for tomorrow,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters in a briefing on Monday, adding that it will take place “in the second half of the day.” Witkoff, abillionaire developer-turned-special envoy,is expected to arrive in Moscow with Jared Kushner, U.S. President Donald Trump’s son-in-law,to discuss a peace framework that U.S. and Ukrainian officials drafted last weekend in Geneva, Switzerland. The Kremlin did not mention Kushner in its statement on Monday. It will be Witkoff’ssixth visit to Russia since January. The draft peace plan emerged amid a renewed burst of diplomacy that kicked off after an original 28-point peace proposal was leaked in the press last month. That initial set of proposals was writtenby the Trump administration and, reportedly, Kremlin officials. The original framework has since been pared down to roughly 20 points, and U.S. officials have hinted that Ukraine agreed to the revised version. However, it remains unclear whether Putin will back the changes, which sources say are “significantly better” for Ukraine than the original list of provisions, widely seen as closer to Russia’s position. Putin said last week thathe may be open to some elements of the U.S. plan to end the war, but he also issueda defiant warning that Russian forces would continue their advance in the Donbas region if Kyiv refuses to accept his conditions for a ceasefire.
