Moscow Faces Unprecedented Drone Assault from Ukraine as Air Defenses Engage

Russian air defense systems intercepted at least 44 Ukrainian drones targeting Moscow from Monday evening to Tuesday morning, according to Mayor Sergei Sobyanin.

This wave of aerial assaults marked the most extensive against the Russian capital since March, when Ukrainian attacks resulted in the deaths of at least three individuals. Sobyanin noted that there were no reported injuries or significant damage, although emergency services were deployed to areas affected by falling debris.

At Sheremetyevo, Russia’s largest airport, flight operations were halted for approximately four hours on Monday night, leading to nearly 100 flight cancellations and several delays.

Aeroflot indicated that it was still managing the repercussions of these delays and cancellations on Tuesday morning. Passengers shared videos of themselves stranded for hours inside stationary aircraft or resting on mattresses within the Sheremetyevo terminal.

The Russian Defense Ministry announced that its air defense forces had downed 81 Ukrainian drones across eight regions, including Moscow, the annexed Crimea, and the Black Sea area, between Monday afternoon and midnight. Additionally, they reported intercepting another 69 drones from midnight until 7 a.m. on Tuesday.

In the Belgorod region to the southwest, local authorities reported that seven individuals suffered injuries from separate Ukrainian drone attacks on Tuesday.

There was no immediate reaction from Ukrainian officials regarding the drone strikes, but authorities in Ukraine stated that Russian shelling had led to two fatalities overnight.
