Ex-Defense Ministry General Sentenced to 9 Years for Corruption in Defense Contracts

A Russian military court sentenced a former general from the Ministry of Defense to nine years in prison on Tuesday for accepting bribes totaling almost $150,000 in exchange for directing state contracts.

Prosecutors revealed that Alexander Ogloblin, who previously held the position of communications chief at the ministry, received funds from a telecommunications company between 2019 and 2023 while managing defense contracts worth over 1.4 billion rubles ($17.3 million).

The 58-year-old Ogloblin pleaded guilty in March and requested a lighter sentence by providing testimony against other generals. In court proceedings, he expressed remorse and emphasized his willingness to cooperate with the investigation.

The prosecution had recommended that the judge impose a sentence exceeding 12 years in prison.

In addition to the prison term, Ogloblin was fined 12.4 million rubles ($153,000), prohibited from holding public office for six years, and stripped of his military rank and state honors.

This was not Ogloblin’s first legal issue; in 2022, he was sentenced to four and a half years for defrauding nearly $20 million in state funds intended for military communications. He received an early release through a corrective labor program after assisting authorities, although the conditions of his release have faced multiple challenges since then.
