The football club “Lokomotiv” paid tribute to the memory of the hockey players and staff of Yaroslavl’s “Lokomotiv,” who tragically lost their lives in a plane crash on September 7, 2011.

“On September 7, 2011, fourteen years ago, a tragedy struck that shook the entire sports world — a plane carrying the Yaroslavl “Lokomotiv” hockey team crashed.

The disaster resulted in the loss of 44 lives.

FC “Lokomotiv” extends its heartfelt condolences to the families and loved ones of the deceased. May the memory of the Yaroslavl “railwaymen” be eternally cherished,” the message from the football club stated.

The largest sports tragedy in modern Russia occurred on September 7, 2011, when a chartered Yak-42 crashed during takeoff from Yaroslavl’s Tunoshna Airport. Onboard were the entire roster and coaching staff of the “Lokomotiv” hockey team. Out of 45 individuals, 43 perished at the scene, and forward Alexander Galimov succumbed to his injuries five days later in the hospital. The sole survivor was Alexander Sizov, an aviation and radio-electronic equipment engineer.
