Transport for London (TfL) has initiated a second public consultation regarding its plans to expand the Docklands Light Railway (DLR) across the River Thames, facilitating connectivity between east and south-east London.
The proposed extension would stretch from Gallions Reach towards Thamesmead, incorporating the Beckton Riverside area. This project includes the addition of two new stations: one at Beckton Riverside and the other at Thamesmead Waterfront, connected by a tunnel beneath the River Thames.
According to TfL, this development could reduce travel times from Thamesmead to approximately 25 minutes to Stratford and 35 minutes to Tottenham Court Road. They estimate the initiative could pave the way for the construction of up to 30,000 new homes and generate around 10,000 jobs, with an overall economic benefit projected at £15.6 billion.
Alex Williams, TfL’s chief customer and strategy officer, emphasized that the rationale for the extension is compelling, as it presents a significant opportunity to foster new housing, employment, and economic advancement. He encouraged the public to share their thoughts on the proposed plans.
This consultation follows an earlier one conducted in 2024, where TfL reported that 75% of participants were in favor of the project. Additional surveys indicated that 85% of local residents supported the initiative.
The project is being developed collaboratively with the Greater London Authority, Greenwich Council, Newham Council, and several prominent landowners. A representative from Greenwich Council noted that Thamesmead is the only district in London without a direct train connection, highlighting the need for equal access to transport links as enjoyed by other areas of the capital. They cited the positive transformation seen with the Elizabeth Line in Woolwich as an example of how a new station could revitalize Thamesmead.
In a letter addressed to the Mayor of London last week, the transport secretary acknowledged the potential for housing and economic development that could arise from the DLR extension to Thamesmead via Beckton but refrained from promising any new financial backing.
TfL and the Greater London Authority (GLA) are anticipated to complete a comprehensive business case and funding strategy by autumn 2025. The consultation document clarified that funding for the project is not currently secure, but efforts are ongoing with the GLA, local authorities, developers, and governmental entities to investigate both public and private funding possibilities.
Subject to the necessary planning approvals and funding, construction could commence in the latter part of the 2020s, with the aim of having services operational by the early 2030s. The consultation period will remain open until 17 August.
