Students at a primary school in East London have been crowned “Britain’s funniest class” by Beano magazine.

The Year 5 kids from Stratus Class at Riverley Primary School in Leyton earned this accolade for their entry in a nationwide joke contest: “What do you call the fanciest punctuation? An a-posh-trophe.”

Mike Stirling, the director of mischief at Beano, praised the joke as “perfectly crafted,” noting that it had his team laughing uproariously.

The pupils, along with their teacher Maisha Mahfuza, who was recognized as Britain’s funniest teacher, were illustrated into a comic for The Beano by cartoonist Nigel Parkinson.

Ms. Mahfuza shared her excitement, stating, “Seeing our class and our joke in Beano felt surreal. It’s important that learning includes a good dose of fun.”

The Beano contest received backing from the children’s mental health charity Place2Be.

Jokes were narrowed down to a top ten by the judges, which then went up for a public vote.

Fitzjohn’s Primary School in Hampstead also made the shortlist with their joke: “Gnasher tried to open a store. Business was ruff!”
