Silvertown Tunnel to Undergo Overnight Maintenance: 17-Night Closure Announcement

Transport for London has announced that the Silvertown Tunnel will undergo general maintenance and snagging works, resulting in closures for 17 nights on various dates until June 22.

During the periods when only the southbound route is affected, buses will be rerouted through the Blackwall Tunnel.

In instances where the northbound lane or both directions are closed, bus services will operate on a split basis, concluding at Canning Town and North Greenwich. Passengers are encouraged to use the Tube or take Route 108 to complete their journey across the river.

A spokesperson for TfL stated, “TfL is committed to ensuring bus services can continue wherever feasible and is actively communicating with drivers regarding the closures, along with regular updates for customers via email.”

Scheduled overnight closures include:

The Silvertown Tunnel, which cost £2.2 billion and was inaugurated on April 7, extends nearly a mile (1.4km) beneath the River Thames, linking Greenwich and Newham, situated adjacent to the Blackwall Tunnel.

Originally proposed in 2012, the project was reviewed by Mayor of London Sir Sadiq Khan upon his election, who later emphasized its importance as a crucial connection across the Thames in east London.

Both tunnels require a toll for passage—£4 for vehicles during peak hours.
