Approximately 350 bus drivers in northeast London are scheduled to strike for four days next month amid an ongoing dispute concerning allegations of “bullying and union suppression” within a bus depot.
The union Unite has claimed that following a management change at the Lea Interchange Bus Garage in Leyton, east London, its members have faced unfair suspensions and “hostile treatment.”
Drivers represented by the union at this Stagecoach depot are planning to walk out on February 6, 7, 20, and 21.
In response, Stagecoach has denied Unite’s claims of union harassment or intimidation, affirming the “significant role” that recognized trade unions play within the company.
One union member was reportedly dismissed without justification, only to be reinstated later, while another was suspended on “fabricated accusations” following an incident with management.
Unite’s General Secretary, Sharon Graham, commented, “Unite will not stand idle while representatives are subjected to bullying; our members at the Lea Interchange Bus Company have our unwavering support during this conflict.”
These upcoming strikes follow previous walkouts in December and January.
Stagecoach London emphasized, “We do not condone the victimization of union representatives engaged in their responsibilities.
Disciplinary actions are managed through well-established procedures agreed upon with the trade union, ensuring these processes are applied fairly to all employees and include rights to representation and appeal.”
Unite regional officer John Murphy noted, “We recognize that repeated strike announcements are frustrating for passengers, but this issue entirely stems from the employer’s failure to propose a resolution.”
Stagecoach London further stated, “We have made significant attempts to address this situation, including agreeing to independent mediation, and we remain open to ongoing discussions. Our main goal is to minimize disruption and ensure a safe, reliable service for our customers throughout the strike.”
The forthcoming industrial action will impact several routes, including the 58, 86, 97, 135, 236, 276, 308, 339, 488, D8, W13, W14, and 678.
Key routes that will be affected include the 97, which services the Westfield Stratford City shopping center, and the 276, which connects to Newham Hospital.
