Ninth Grader Assaults Teacher After Receiving Poor Marks in St. Petersburg Incident

A ninth-grade student in St. Petersburg stabbed a teacher at his high school on Monday following dissatisfaction with his grades, according to Russian law enforcement authorities.

The unnamed student attacked the 29-year-old teacher with a knife within the school premises, as stated by the St. Petersburg branch of the Interior Ministry.

“The attack appears to have been provoked by the student receiving a poor academic evaluation,” the ministry reported. Afterward, the student attempted suicide but was intervened by police officers.

The Investigative Committee of Russia, which looks into serious crimes, announced that it has initiated an inquiry regarding attempted murder, highlighting that the teacher suffered multiple stab wounds.

Both the teacher and student were taken to a hospital where their condition was reported as serious but stable, as per the local news source Fontanka.

Reports from various media outlets identified the teacher as Maria Andreyeva, who teaches mathematics at School No. 191, and mentioned that the student is the child of a history teacher affiliated with the same institution.

Fontanka also shared social media claims suggesting that the student was not properly searched despite metal detectors indicating the presence of a knife at the school entrance. However, officials have not yet addressed these allegations publicly.

Classes reportedly resumed after the incident, though some parents opted to retrieve their children early from school.
