Ukrainian Drones Target Gazprom Facility in Bashkortostan Twice Within a Week

Ukrainian drones have targeted a significant Gazprom oil and petrochemical facility in Bashkortostan for the second time within a week, regional officials reported early Wednesday.

Radiy Khabirov, the head of Bashkortostan, confirmed that the Gazprom Neftekhim Salavat complex, situated over 1,000 kilometers (620 miles) from Ukraine’s border, was struck during the latest attack. He noted that there were no reported injuries, and the extent of the damage is still being evaluated.

Khabirov did not disclose the number of drones involved or the exact timing of the strike. Additionally, Russia’s Defense Ministry did not reference the incident in its report concerning overnight drone strikes throughout the country.

An unverified clip circulating on social media showed a substantial dark cloud of smoke emerging from the refinery, following reports from local residents who heard multiple loud blasts.

Gazprom Neftekhim Salavat, which ranks as Russia’s tenth-largest refinery with an annual processing capability of 10 million metric tons, manufactures over 150 types of petroleum and chemical products. This facility was previously attacked by Ukrainian drones last Thursday.

Recently, Ukraine has intensified its assaults on Russian energy infrastructure, targeting at least ten refineries since early August, leading Russia to reduce its refining capacity by nearly 20% at one point, according to Reuters. These strikes have resulted in fuel shortages across the nation, significantly raising wholesale prices.

Transneft, Russia’s state-controlled pipeline operator, has reportedly cautioned producers that output might be further limited if drone attacks continue to compromise essential facilities. Similarly, Gazprom Neft announced last week that it had delayed planned maintenance at its Omsk Oil Refinery in response to government initiatives aimed at stabilizing domestic fuel supplies.
