Ukrainian Drone Attack Claims Life in Belgorod as Russia Reports Interceptions of Hundreds of UAVs

A woman died as a result of a Ukrainian drone strike in Belgorod, a city in southwestern Russia, local officials reported on Friday. This incident occurred after the Russian Defense Ministry announced that it had intercepted hundreds of drones overnight across the country.

Vyacheslav Gladkov, the Governor of Belgorod region, confirmed the woman’s death without providing additional information. Local Telegram news sources posted images of police cordoning off a bus stop and covering the victim’s body with aluminum foil.

Shortly after, Gladkov reported that a civilian had sustained injuries in a separate drone attack on the nearby village of Krasny Oktyabr, situated 13 kilometers (8 miles) from the Ukrainian border.

The Russian Defense Ministry stated it had downed 10 Ukrainian drones in the Belgorod region between 8 a.m. and 9:15 a.m. on Friday, but did not confirm if any managed to hit their targets.

In total, the military claimed to have intercepted 221 drones throughout Russia during the night. The majority of these were reported to have been shot down in the Bryansk and Smolensk regions, which border Belarus and where joint military exercises between Russia and Belarus are currently taking place.

According to Rosatom, the state nuclear agency, a drone targeted a nuclear power plant in Smolensk around 4 a.m. local time, but air defense systems successfully destroyed the drone near the facility. Rosatom reassured that the power plant is still operational and that there have been no changes in radiation levels.

In the northwestern Leningrad region, local officials reported that 28 drones were intercepted. A fire broke out on a vessel in the coastal town of Primorsk, although Leningrad region Governor Alexander Drozdenko stated that the blaze was quickly extinguished.

Primorsk, located along the Gulf of Finland, is Russia’s largest oil loading port, responsible for handling approximately 72 million tons of crude oil each year.
