U.S. Cancels Trump-Putin Summit in Budapest Amidst Moscows Stringent Demands on Ukraine

The United States has called off a scheduled summit between President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Budapest after Moscow reiterated its extensive demands regarding Ukraine, as reported by the Financial Times on Friday, citing informed sources.

Earlier in October, Trump and Putin had agreed to meet in the Hungarian capital to explore potential solutions to Russia’s ongoing invasion, which has lasted three and a half years.

Shortly after, Russia’s Foreign Ministry allegedly sent a memorandum to Washington, reiterating its demands that Ukraine relinquish territory, reduce its military forces, and commit to never joining NATO.

The cancellation of the summit followed a conversation between Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who apparently informed Trump that Russia was “showing no willingness to negotiate.” In a YouTube interview on Sunday, Lavrov claimed that Trump had “radically” altered his stance on achieving peace in Ukraine after the August summit with Putin in Alaska.

“[Trump] was not impressed with their position,” one insider shared with the Financial Times.

They noted that Trump remained open to meeting with his Russian counterparts “when and where he believes there can be progress.”

However, Trump was reportedly “irritated” by Putin’s comments regarding Russia’s military successes near the eastern Ukrainian city of Kupiansk and the Oskil River during their call on October 16, according to the FT.

Moscow has insisted on gaining control over the remaining territories in the Donetsk region as a prerequisite for peace negotiations, a condition that Kyiv has firmly rejected.

Neither the Kremlin, the Russian Foreign Ministry, nor the U.S. State Department responded to requests for comment.
