A memorial vigil is set to take place for a man who was shot and killed by police on the Tube two decades ago due to a tragic case of mistaken identity involving a suicide bomber.
Jean Charles de Menezes, a Brazilian electrician, was shot seven times in the head and once in the shoulder by two police officers at Stockwell station on July 22, 2005. This incident occurred just a day after unsuccessful bombings targeted the London transport system and two weeks following the devastating 7/7 attacks in central London.
At 10:00 BST, his family will gather outside the Tube station to honor the memory of the 27-year-old man. Despite the gravity of the situation, no officers faced prosecution for the incident, although the Metropolitan Police were fined for violating health and safety regulations. Earlier this year, the police reiterated their apology to the de Menezes family.
In April, Mr. de Menezes’ relatives expressed to the BBC their commitment to continue advocating for justice and to “reveal the truth to the world.”
Before the release of a four-part drama series on Disney+ about the incident, his mother, Maria de Menezes, emphasized her desire for an accurate portrayal of events, particularly countering early reports that suggested her son had jumped the barriers and confronted police.
De Menezes was misidentified as one of the suspects because of a connection to the same apartment complex.
In November, the unnamed officer who fired the shots disclosed to Channel 4 that there was a firm belief that “we were going to die” if he did not take action.
Here is a timeline of the shooting of Jean Charles de Menezes.
