Teenage Extremism: Russia Labels 14-Year-Old Boys as Terrorists Amid Growing Concerns

Russia’s financial oversight agency, Rosfinmonitoring, has recently included two 14-year-old boys on its list of individuals classified as “terrorists and extremists.”

Amir Shagatov and Timofey Lubenets, both hailing from Orenburg, were added to this list on Thursday, as indicated on the agency’s official website. They are reported to be the fifth and sixth teenagers aged 14 to receive such a designation since the previous autumn.

Law enforcement has yet to make any comments about these classifications, but reports suggest that the boys are facing charges related to terrorism.

Tulegen Shagatov, Amir’s father, informed the investigative news platform Agentstvo that his son was taken into custody alongside friends and is currently under house arrest. He expressed uncertainty regarding the exact charges against Amir, who is in the seventh grade.

“He got mixed up with some people… It’s possible he was coerced or invited to join [a group]. I can’t say for sure,” he reportedly stated.

As reported by Agentstvo, Shagatov and Lubenets are connected on the Russian social media platform VKontakte, indicating that they may have been charged together.

Additionally, on the same day, Rosfinmonitoring included another teenager, 16-year-old Vadim Tukashev, from the Orenburg area, on its “terrorists and extremists” list.

The list maintained by Rosfinmonitoring currently comprises over 17,800 individuals and more than 800 organizations. These designations grant authorities the power to freeze bank accounts and restrict access to financial services without requiring a court order.
