Teen Phenom Transforms Living Room into Hub of Hope with Hygiene Kits for Homeless

A teenager from west London has garnered recognition for transforming his family’s living room into a temporary center for assembling hygiene kits for individuals experiencing homelessness.

Rohan Mehta, a resident of Kensington, initiated his project called In The Bag two years ago.

To date, the 17-year-old has distributed 130 bags filled with toiletries, toothbrushes, and various essential items to homeless individuals in London.

Currently studying for his A-levels at Latymer Upper School, Rohan received the Young Achiever award from Kensington and Chelsea Council, along with a civic honour from Hammersmith and Fulham Council.

The compassionate teenager shared that homelessness has always been a cause close to his heart.

He recalled that as a child, whenever he noticed someone on the street, he would ask his parents if they could assist that person with food or money.

“I always felt the desire to be part of the solution, and as I grew older, I pondered what concrete actions I could take,” he explained.

“I wanted to create something practical that could not only raise awareness but also provide people with items that could enhance their dignity and comfort. That was the motivation behind starting In The Bag.”

Rohan was just 15 when he started to explore this concept.

Soon enough, their living room was filled with various hygiene products like shower gel, shampoo, conditioner, toothbrushes, and toothpaste.

“I aimed to address daily hygiene needs,” he said. “For individuals without homes, accessing these essentials is often a challenge. When they stay at a shelter overnight, having the chance to clean up can significantly boost their well-being.”

“As I delved into economics, I began to consider the job-seeking aspect related to poverty cycles and recognized the immense difficulty involved in breaking free from that cycle.”

He noted that being presentable and clean is crucial for job interviews, emphasizing his desire to help alleviate that hurdle since it is indeed a significant challenge.

His dedication has not gone unnoticed by local authorities; in March, Rohan was awarded the Young Achiever’s Award by the mayor of Kensington and Chelsea, and in April, he received a civic honour from Hammersmith and Fulham Council for his role in contributing to a stronger, safer, and kinder community.
