Spreading Hope: 1,400 Dignity-Infused Rucksacks Distributed to Londons Homeless This Christmas

This holiday season, over 1,400 specialized backpacks, intended to serve as “a symbol of dignity for those experiencing homelessness,” will be given to London’s homeless community.

These backpacks, known as CITYPAK, are equipped with features such as a waterproof poncho and reflective safety components to enhance their usability.

The bags were distributed at St Martin-in-the-Fields, located near Trafalgar Square, by The Connection, a London-based charity that assists “hundreds of individuals facing homelessness each day.”

The issue of homelessness is escalating in London, with outreach workers reporting more than 13,000 individuals sleeping rough during the 2024–2025 count—the highest figure documented by the Combined Homelessness and Information Network.

Carrie Lombardi, the director, commented, “While it’s just a backpack and doesn’t resolve the issue of homelessness, our experience in distributing them has shown that they serve as a valuable practical resource. They also create opportunities to engage with our homeless neighbors and connect them to the wonderful organizations throughout the city.”

At Trafalgar Square, The Connection filled the backpacks with “basic necessities that many of us often take for granted,” such as warm clothing.

Michael Bird, an individual currently receiving assistance from The Connection, shared his story: “In 2022, I faced several challenges, including mental health struggles and substance abuse, which I was using to cope. My living situation deteriorated, prompting me to come to London, which was incredibly daunting. I felt lost without even a sleeping bag.”

With help from others who had experienced life on the streets, he discovered organizations like The Connection that offer showers, meals, and shelter.

Mr. Bird expressed the significance of a good backpack for those living on the streets. “When I first found myself homeless, I was using a shopping bag, which was simply impractical given the weather conditions. A reliable bag is essential—it can double as a pillow, and when it’s raining, a waterproof one makes a significant difference. Wet clothes can be harmful, especially in this kind of weather.”

CITYPAK, a non-profit organization based in the United States, was established in 2012 by music agent Ron Kaplan. It has since provided over 120,000 backpacks through more than 400 partner organizations in over 230 cities across the U.S.

Additionally, CITYPAK plans to supply backpacks to various partners in London, including CRISIS, The Salvation Army’s No. 10 Day Centre, Refettorio Felix at St Cuthbert’s, Chelsea Methodist Church, Mary Smith’s Pantry, and Pimlico Angels.
