Somerset House Marks 25 Years of Cultural Enrichment with Special Celebrations and Unforgettable Experiences

This weekend, Somerset House will mark 25 years in its present form with a series of complimentary events, installations, performances, and workshops.

Before it transformed into the cultural venue we know today, this central London structure served as government offices, was the headquarters of the Royal Navy, and once sheltered Queen Elizabeth I.

Over the last 25 years, it has gained renown for its seasonal ice rink and summer music events and film screenings.

Jonathan Reekie, the director of Somerset House, remarked, “Somerset House is cherished as a cultural hub in London and has evolved into a nurturing ground for many of the country’s top creative talents – a vibrant force for emerging artists.”

He noted that the anniversary celebrations would provide a “rare chance” for visitors to explore parts of the historic site that are not typically accessible to the public.

Additionally, the nearby Waterloo Bridge will be illuminated in a “Somerset House blue” for the occasion.

Musician and producer Alison Goldfrapp expressed, “Somerset House is nothing short of extraordinary.

“Performing there beneath the open sky and within its historic grounds is a delightful privilege.”

She added, “The environment is distinct. It’s a place where art, music, and life come together in a remarkable way.”

Last year, a fire nearly led to a “complete disaster” for the building.

On August 17, 2024, approximately 125 firefighters and 20 fire engines responded to the blaze, which caused damage to the roof and a portion of the west wing of the complex.

Mr. Reekie explained that the fire was quickly contained thanks to the “quick-thinking staff” and the remarkable response from the London Fire Brigade.
