Sochis Beaches Closed as Flash Floods Transform City into Waterlogged Landscape

Heavy rainfall struck the Black Sea resort city of Sochi overnight, leading to elevated water levels and the temporary closure of local beaches for a minimum of 24 hours, according to local officials on Monday.

“We have temporarily shut down the official swimming beaches,” stated Sochi Mayor Andrei Proshunin during an emergency session. He noted that monitoring teams have been directed to enhance surveillance of local waterways and to advise individuals in leisure areas to stay alert.

A storm warning is in effect until late Tuesday. From Monday to Wednesday, heavy rain, strong winds, and hail are expected across southern Russia and the annexed Crimea.

Videos shared on social media depicted floodwaters nearly submerging vehicles overnight, alongside snowfall in the mountainous regions surrounding Sochi. City officials reported that temperatures dropped to 0ºC (32ºF) at elevations above 2,000 meters (6,500 feet).

According to the city administration, water levels in the Ira River in the Dagomys district of Sochi rose but receded by midday Monday.

Officials confirmed that the heavy rain had not impacted essential infrastructure or public transport. At least 10 trees were reported down due to the storm, but there were no reported injuries.
