A teenage boy has confessed to tossing a large seat 50 feet (15 meters) off the top level of an east London shopping center as part of an online prank, barely missing bystanders.
He and another youth were apprehended after footage of the incident, recorded at Westfield in Stratford on March 1, gained widespread attention online.
The two 15-year-olds, who are protected by anonymity laws, appeared at Stratford Magistrates’ Court, where the boy responsible for throwing the seat pleaded guilty to charges of criminal damage and recklessly causing a public disturbance. He has been granted bail until his sentencing set for August 13.
The teenager accused of filming the event has denied all charges and is scheduled to return to court on September 24.
A video presented in court, allegedly recorded by one of the boys, depicted a hooded young man launching a heavy blue seat over a glass railing before both fled the scene while swearing.
Prosecutor Elizabeth Ajayi remarked that the seat, removed from a public area of the mall, was thrown from the upper floor. “It’s a stroke of luck that no one was harmed,” she stated.
The court learned that the duo had previously engaged in similar antics, including “hurling objects off bridges at trains.”
Both teenagers admitted their participation during police questioning, according to Ms. Ajayi.
In a victim impact statement, a security officer from Westfield noted a sense of “unease” among patrons following the incident.
The boy who threw the seat reportedly told the police, “It’s not that serious; it didn’t hit anyone,” as added by the prosecutor.
A prior charge of criminal damage that posed a reckless risk to life was withdrawn.
