Rutube Prepares for Major Workforce Reductions Ahead of Planned Merger with Gazprom Media Subsidiaries

The Rutube video platform in Russia is set to implement “immediate” and “considerable” layoffs as it prepares to merge with other media outlets owned by Gazprom, according to a report from the business news site Frank Media, citing unnamed sources familiar with the situation.

In June, Gazprom Media announced plans for Rutube to merge with the streaming service Premier and the TikTok-like platform Yappy, all under the unified Rutube brand, which is expected to debut in the first half of 2026.

“These companies had numerous overlapping roles, and with the creation of a single large platform, many positions are now redundant,” one insider revealed to Frank Media.

Gazprom Media indicated they are exploring “various restructuring and optimization strategies” but did not disclose the number of job reductions. Frank Media mentioned that “whole departments are being eliminated.”

Yappy, which was intended to be Russia’s equivalent of TikTok, reportedly has only about 30 of its original 300 employees still with the company.

A source informed Frank Media that “the HR department stated that the company lacks the financial resources to support such a large workforce.”

In 2024, Gazprom Media and its subsidiaries incurred a loss of 247 million rubles (approximately $3 million), whereas the parent company Gazprom reported revenues amounting to 163.5 billion rubles ($2 billion).
