On Thursday, Russia’s Education Ministry released a compilation of 37 “patriotic” songs that it suggests teachers incorporate into their music curriculum.
According to the ministry’s statement, “The document has been distributed to various regions in Russia… Schools have the discretion to choose whether to implement the recommended pieces.”
The songs were curated by a panel of cultural figures, including conductor Valery Gergiev and opera singer Ildar Abdrazakov, and are intended to “promote patriotism, as well as spiritual and moral values among students.”
The collection features 17 songs from wartime, such as “Soldiers Are Coming,” alongside 20 others like “Red Sun” and “My Moscow.” It includes classic Soviet pieces like David Tukhmanov’s “Victory Day” as well as modern tracks by pro-war pop artist Shaman, including “My Russia.”
Additional artists who back Moscow’s military actions in Ukraine and are part of the list include Oleg Gazmanov, the band Lyube, and State Duma member Denis Maidanov.
Earlier this year, Shaman, Gazmanov, and Maidanov visited schools as part of a parliamentary initiative to aid in creating the list, which will be introduced in classrooms at the start of the new school year next month.
This initiative is part of a broader government strategy to reinforce “patriotic” education and increase support for Russia’s actions in Ukraine. However, critics argue that this is an attempt to indoctrinate young people.
