Russia Accuses Ukraine of Provoking Drone Incident in Romania

On Sunday, the Russian embassy in Romania asserted that a drone incident that occurred the previous day was a “provocation” orchestrated by Ukraine.

According to Romania’s Defense Ministry, two of its fighter jets intercepted a drone that had entered Romanian airspace during the ongoing Russian assaults on Ukraine.

The ministry clarified that the drone did not traverse any populated regions and did not pose a risk to civilian safety.

In response to the situation, Romania’s Foreign Ministry called in Russian Ambassador Vladimir Lipayev on Sunday.

The Russian embassy refuted claims that one of its drones had crossed into Romanian airspace, labeling it instead as a “deliberate provocation by the Kyiv regime.”

Additionally, it criticized the Bucharest authorities for not providing adequate and convincing answers to Moscow regarding the airspace violation.

Since the onset of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Romania has reported multiple instances of drone interceptions within its borders.

The incident on Saturday came just days after Poland reported that it had downed several Russian drones that had breached its airspace during a significant aerial assault on Ukraine.

Both Romania and Poland are members of NATO.

Reporting by AFP contributed to this information.
