The motorist involved in the fatal incident that claimed the lives of two 8-year-old girls at a school in south-west London has been questioned following her recent re-arrest linked to their deaths.
Nuria Sajjad and Selena Lau lost their lives when a Land Rover, driven by Claire Freemantle, collided with an end-of-term tea party at The Study Preparatory School in Wimbledon on 6 July 2023.
Initially, the 48-year-old Ms. Freemantle was apprehended at the scene but was subsequently informed that she would not face charges. However, she was re-arrested in January after a reconsideration of the investigation by the police.
On Thursday, 17 July, the Metropolitan Police announced that she had been interviewed on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and has since been released on bail until October as further inquiries continue.
The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) indicated that Ms. Freemantle may have suffered an epileptic seizure while driving, leading to the loss of control of her vehicle, which resulted in the crash at the school.
Nevertheless, they noted that there is no evidence of her ever having experienced a similar seizure previously, nor had she been diagnosed with such a condition.
Relatives of the schoolgirls recently expressed to the BBC their frustration over the lack of answers regarding the incident.
Nuria’s father, Sajjad Butt, discussed the ongoing police investigation, stating, “While we appreciate this renewed attention on the case, we will persist in our demand for complete transparency about the events of that tragic day. The truth must be unveiled.”
