Putin and Trump Discuss U.S. Independence Day and Global Conflicts in Lengthy Phone Call

Russian President Vladimir Putin and U.S. President Donald Trump engaged in a phone call on Thursday, which the Kremlin characterized as “businesslike and direct,” stating that the two leaders were “on the same page.”

Putin initially revealed the upcoming call during his attendance at a Russian brands exhibition, where he indicated to a vendor that he would “certainly suggest” Trump advocate for Russian goods in the U.S. market. Trump later acknowledged the planned discussion through a post on Truth Social.

The conversation lasted nearly an hour and addressed a variety of subjects, as reported by Kremlin foreign policy adviser Yuri Ushakov. Among the topics were ongoing peace negotiations concerning the conflict in Ukraine, the situation in Syria, recent airstrike exchanges between Israel and Iran, and a proposed “exchange” of films that highlight “traditional values.”

Ushakov mentioned that Putin also extended his congratulations to Trump in anticipation of U.S. Independence Day on July 4. He noted, “We recognized that Russia contributed to the establishment of the American nation, including during the War of Independence… and again during the Civil War,” in an audio statement published by the Kremlin.

In response, Trump reportedly briefed Putin on his tax and spending reduction legislation, which is presently awaiting a vote in the U.S. Congress.

Ushakov clarified that the two leaders did not address U.S. military assistance to Ukraine, which has seen a partial suspension recently, nor did they discuss a potential third round of direct peace negotiations, which the Kremlin insists is a matter strictly between Ukraine and Russia.

Later on Thursday, Trump informed reporters that he and Putin “discussed various issues, including the situation with Iran.” He also mentioned their conversation regarding the war in Ukraine, expressing his dissatisfaction with the situation and stating that he “didn’t achieve any progress” during his call with Putin.

This marked the first telephone conversation between Putin and Trump since June 14.

The call occurred just days after Putin spoke with French President Emmanuel Macron for the first time since 2022, during which Macron urged Putin to agree to a ceasefire in Ukraine “as soon as possible.”
