An explosion occurred on a significant underground gas pipeline close to the Siberian city of Omsk on Tuesday, creating a towering fireball that prompted several industrial facilities to shut off their gas supply, as reported by regional authorities.
The fire ignited in a field near Rostovka, approximately 10 kilometers (6 miles) to the west of Omsk, as stated by the local branch of the Prosecutor General’s Office.
Footage shared on social media captured commuters waiting at a bus stop when they heard a loud explosion, followed by flames rising in the distance.
Governor of the Omsk region, Vitaly Khotsenko, mentioned that investigators were looking into a potential gas leak as the possible trigger for the explosion. The prosecutor’s office confirmed it was conducting a preliminary investigation into the event.
Khotsenko also indicated that several industrial facilities had been severed from the gas network while technicians worked to restore the supply. According to Gazprom specialists, repair operations could take as long as 24 hours.
The governor assured that there were no reported injuries or fatalities resulting from the pipeline explosion and that residents of Omsk and surrounding areas were safe.
Additionally, the incident did not seem to be related to recent overnight drone strikes from Ukraine, which primarily affected regions near Russia’s eastern border, as per the Russian Defense Ministry.
Incidents involving gas pipelines are a recurring issue in Russia’s aging energy infrastructure.
