An engagement in Chelsea, a neighborhood street celebration, the iconic St Paul’s Cathedral, and a sunset over Regent’s Park might seem like typical backdrops for a photography contest—yet the focal point of this one is quite different: a rental bicycle.
To commemorate 15 years since the introduction of what many refer to as “Boris Bikes,” Transport for London (TfL) initiated this photography contest. Although it was former Mayor Boris Johnson who launched the initiative, it was actually his predecessor, Ken Livingstone, who originally conceived the program.
TfL invited cyclists to capture images of the officially designated Santander Cycles in settings that highlight the diverse “natural landscapes, landmarks, and hidden treasures” of London.
Over 100 entries were received for the contest, and a panel of judges from TfL and the Natural History Museum chose the top 15 submissions.
The winners have been awarded a complimentary annual cycling pass along with tickets to a photography exhibition.
