Murder Investigation Launched After Judge Found Dead in Volgograd Region: Suspected Jealousy Motive Emerges

A murder probe has been initiated following the discovery of a deceased judge near the Kamyshin city court building in Russia’s Volgograd region, according to law enforcement officials late Thursday. Media reports suggest the killing could have been motivated by jealousy.

Authorities have detained an individual on charges of murder and illegal firearm possession, as reported by the regional department of Russia’s Investigative Committee, which examines serious crimes. They confirmed that the judge sustained both gunshot wounds and stab injuries.

It was emphasized that the suspect was “involved in commercial enterprises,” with various media outlets suggesting, based on anonymous sources, that he had served in Russia’s extensive military offensive in Ukraine.

On Friday morning, investigators informed state news services that the suspect confessed during interrogation. However, the names of both the victim and the accused have not yet been released by officials.

The independent news organization Agentstvo stated that it could not verify whether the suspect had participated in the conflict in Ukraine.

According to unconfirmed reports shared by the outlet, the suspect has been identified as Sergei Kibalnikov, a 47-year-old entrepreneur originally from Belarus. His wife, Yelena Kibalnikova, is listed as a clerk at the Kamyshinsky City Court alongside the deceased judge, Vasily Vetlugin.

The Telegram channel Baza, which is believed to have connections with Russia’s security services, revealed horrific details about the murder, indicating signs of mutilation on the body, and suggested that jealousy could have been the motive behind the crime.

Yelena Kibalnikova chose not to comment when approached by Agentstvo.
