Moscow Blast Claims Lives of Two Traffic Officers, Investigation Underway

A nighttime explosion in southern Moscow resulted in the deaths of three individuals, including two police officers, near the location where a Russian general was assassinated by a car bomb earlier this week, according to law enforcement officials on Wednesday.

The blast happened when two traffic police officers approached a “suspicious individual” near a police vehicle, as stated by Russia’s Investigative Committee. All three—both officers and the individual—were killed in the explosion.

Authorities released video footage depicting debris spread across an empty street and a blurred figure at the site of the blast. Additional videos circulating on social media showed a significant police presence following the incident.

The Investigative Committee reported that investigators were on-site examining the area and performing forensic tests, which would include medical and explosive analyses.

Alexander Bastrykin, the head of the law enforcement body, ordered federal forensic experts to assist in the investigation to identify those accountable and clarify the circumstances surrounding the explosion.

Moscow’s investigative division indicated that they are treating this incident as an attempted murder of law enforcement personnel and are also looking into potential illegal trafficking of explosives.

The explosion took place around 1:30 a.m. on Yeletskaya Street, located in the Orekhovo-Borisovo Yuzhnoye district, as per Russian television reports citing witnesses. The area has been cordoned off and remains under strict police surveillance as of Wednesday morning.

Yeletskaya Street intersects with the road where Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was killed on Monday, after a bomb detonated beneath his vehicle.

Authorities have initiated a murder investigation into this prior incident and are exploring possible connections to Ukrainian intelligence services.
