The Metropolitan Police have confiscated luxury vehicles valued at millions of pounds to address reckless driving in central London.
In a focused three-day initiative across Hyde Park, Kensington, and Chelsea, police seized 72 cars estimated at around £6 million, which included identical purple Lamborghinis.
Drivers received citations for various traffic violations, such as operating a vehicle without insurance, lacking a valid driving license, being disqualified, presenting false documents, and using counterfeit number plates.
Additionally, several stolen vehicles were recovered, and eight arrests were made for multiple offenses, including one individual wanted for actual bodily harm (ABH) and criminal damage.
In one case, officers stopped a car due to an issue with its insurance. Upon conducting routine checks, they gathered sufficient evidence to detain four individuals on immigration-related charges.
According to the police, uninsured driving frequently correlates with more extensive criminal activities, such as driving under the influence, using disqualified drivers, operating stolen vehicles, laundering money, trafficking drugs, and organized crime.
The seized luxury vehicles included Ferraris, Lamborghinis, and Bentleys that were either not fit for road use or being driven in violation of the law.
Two uninsured purple Lamborghinis were also taken into custody after being flown into the UK for the owner’s summer vacation.
One of the drivers had only been in the UK for two hours and had driven for 15 minutes before their car was confiscated, as reported by the Motor Insurers’ Bureau.
Numerous seized vehicles had been imported from abroad, with drivers relying on insurance policies from their home countries without confirming whether those policies offered coverage in the UK, the organization pointed out.
Andy Trotter, from the Motor Insurers’ Bureau, stated: “In the UK, someone is involved in an incident with an uninsured driver every 20 minutes, one person is seriously hurt every day due to an uninsured driver, and one life is lost each week because of uninsured drivers.”
One driver interviewed by BBC London commented: “It seems the car was flagged as uninsured under this registration.
“It was my error as I changed the registration two days prior.
“The DVLA did not automatically update it from the original registration to the personalized one, and I neglected to inform my insurance company of the new registration.”
Special Chief Officer James Deller of the Met’s Special Constabulary noted that this operation was instigated due to concerns from the local community and businesses about high-value vehicles being a “nuisance” in central and west London.
During the operation, seven men and one woman were arrested.
In a similar operation last year, police confiscated vehicles valued at £60 million, which included a McLaren, Bentley, Rolls Royce, Ferrari, and Lamborghini, primarily due to a lack of insurance.
