Legendary Russian Composer Rodion Shchedrin Passes Away at 92, Leaving a Lasting Legacy

Russian composer Rodion Shchedrin, celebrated for his ballets such as “Anna Karenina” and “Carmen Suite,” has passed away at the age of 92, according to a statement from Moscow’s Bolshoi Theatre on Friday.

Shchedrin, who was married to the legendary ballerina Maya Plisetskaya, has been recognized as “one of the greatest contemporary geniuses,” with his compositions being performed on major stages around the globe, as noted by the Bolshoi.

“Rodion Shchedrin was a remarkable figure who defined a significant era in the landscape of global music,” the statement declared.

The state-owned news agency TASS reported, referencing a source close to Shchedrin, that he died in Germany.

Born in Moscow on December 16, 1932, Shchedrin rose to international prominence with his 1967 work, “Carmen Suite,” which featured Plisetskaya at the Bolshoi and established them as a renowned cultural duo during the Soviet era. Plisetskaya, one of the most admired ballerinas of the 20th century, passed away in 2015 at the age of 89.

Shchedrin drew inspiration from Russian literature and folklore, creating works such as the ballets “The Little Humpbacked Horse” and “The Seagull,” along with the opera “Lolita.” In total, he composed over 80 works, including symphonies and concertos, leaving a legacy that the Bolshoi described as “an invaluable artistic heritage that resonates in the hearts of the audience.”
