Legacy of Valor: WWII Codebreaker Ruth Bourne Passes Away at 98, Honoring Her Pivotal Role in Defeating the Enigma

A Bletchley Park codebreaker who served during World War II as both a Bombe machine operator and checker has passed away at the age of 98.

Ruth Bourne, a Jewish veteran hailing from High Barnet in north London, enlisted in the Women’s Royal Naval Service at 18, later being selected to work at the covert facility in Buckinghamshire to decode intercepted communications.

The Bombe machine, designed by Alan Turing, was an electromechanical apparatus utilized to decrypt Germany’s Enigma code, enabling the rapid determination of daily settings to understand enemy messages—an innovation that altered the war’s trajectory and saved countless lives.

In 2018, she received the prestigious Légion d’honneur from France, the nation’s highest military distinction, in acknowledgment of her contributions.

Ms. Bourne expressed that she took “a small measure of personal pride” in her involvement with anti-Nazi efforts.

She was largely oblivious to Bletchley Park’s broader objectives: “I was only aware of my own duties,” she reflected, noting her oath of secrecy.

The Taxi Charity for Military Veterans shared on Facebook, “Ruth’s role in the monumental endeavor of breaking the Enigma cipher was genuinely historic.

“She was an extraordinary woman filled with charm and charisma, and she will be greatly missed by everyone fortunate enough to have known her.”

The work undertaken by Bletchley Park codebreakers enabled British intelligence to respond swiftly to decrypted intelligence, playing a crucial part in significant military achievements.

Their contributions also laid the groundwork for the industrialization of codebreaking practices and the advancement of early computing technology.
