An elderly man receiving care at a hospital in west London has passed away, one week after allegedly being assaulted by another patient.

Eighty-five-year-old Andrew Farmer, a resident of Ealing, was discovered with significant injuries following an incident that prompted police to respond to reports of an assault at Charing Cross Hospital in Hammersmith on September 18. He died on September 25.

Paul Wrigley, Mr. Farmer’s longtime partner, expressed his sorrow: “He was my beloved companion for 60 years, and he will be profoundly missed. An Oxford graduate – everything he engaged with, he did so with great depth – be it opera, the landscapes of Devon, or advocating for the less fortunate.”

On September 20, Anatoliy Podmazko, 70, was charged with grievous bodily harm (GBH) and is scheduled to appear at Isleworth Crown Court on October 17, according to police reports.

In a heartfelt tribute, Mr. Wrigley remarked, “He was learned yet possessed a clever sense of humour. Rest peacefully now, my dear friend.”

The Metropolitan Police have announced the initiation of a murder investigation following Mr. Farmer’s death.

Detective Inspector Kirsten Hadleigh, who is overseeing the inquiry, stated: “Our thoughts are with Andrew’s family and friends during this extremely challenging time. We are maintaining close communication with his loved ones and will keep them informed about the progress of our investigation.”
