Heathrow Airport announced that last month marked its busiest April ever, accommodating nearly 7.1 million travelers.
This figure represents a 5.9% increase compared to April of the previous year, although the surge was influenced in part by the timing of Easter this year.
The west London airport also noted that it achieved the “highest on-time departure record among major European airports,” with 99% of luggage arriving as scheduled and 97% of passengers passing through security in under five minutes.
Chief Executive Thomas Woldbye remarked, “Last month showcased Heathrow at its finest – we adeptly handled our busiest April to date while enhancing our service levels significantly.”
Mr. Woldbye mentioned that preparations are already “underway throughout the airport” to gear up for the upcoming busy summer season.
“We are delivering excellent value for our travelers, and I take pride in what we have accomplished with our Team Heathrow partners thus far this year,” he added.
Some airlines utilizing Heathrow have labeled it as the most expensive airport globally in terms of passenger fees.
On March 21, the airport experienced a significant disruption due to a fire at a substation that affected approximately 200,000 travelers throughout the day.
A recent interim report from the National Energy System Operator (Neso) indicated that the cause of the fire remains unknown, but it confirmed that power was restored to the airport’s terminals seven hours before flights could resume.
In light of the report’s findings, Heathrow Airport stated that it had raised “critical questions,” including inquiries into the origins of the fire.
