A wheel of Double Gloucester cheese, claimed during the annual cheese rolling competitions in Gloucestershire, is set to be offered to homeless individuals in north London.

Ava Sender Logan, a 20-year-old first-time participant, secured the 7lb (3kg) cheese during the women’s race last month by careening down the steep incline of Cooper’s Hill in Brockworth.

The London-based student generously donated her “delicious” reward to the Refugee Community Kitchen, expressing her joy that others can enjoy it as well.

Sam Jones, co-founder of the charity, expressed gratitude toward Ava for her daring effort to win the cheese.

The Refugee Community Kitchen provides assistance to displaced individuals in northern France and those experiencing homelessness in London and Edinburgh.

Miss Sender Logan, who also volunteers for the kitchen, described sharing her winning cheese as a significant “full-circle moment.”

“Isn’t it wonderful?” she remarked. “The cheese has journeyed from Gloucestershire to Oxford and finally to London for the kitchen.”

The biochemistry student, who was the fastest down the 1:2 slope, admitted she doesn’t recall much of her descent, feeling astonished when she emerged victorious.

“I was focused on keeping my balance as best I could, but there’s only so much you can manage,” she said. “I ended up with a few bruises and scrapes, but thankfully no broken bones.”

The charity, founded in 2015 by four friends, has provided thousands of meals in London and Calais over the past decade.

Mr. Jones noted that up to 90 individuals in and around Archway, London, will have the opportunity to “enjoy” the prize-winning cheese.

“It’s a lovely full circle to have cheese that rolled down the hill being transformed into a cauliflower and broccoli cheese meal to be served on the streets,” he shared. “It brings us immense joy and fulfillment to be able to do this.”

The tradition of cheese rolling in Gloucestershire dates back centuries and is believed to originate from a pagan festival celebrating the arrival of spring.

Cooper’s Hill is known for its steep decline, where the cheese can reach speeds up to 70mph as participants chase it down.

This year, the event featured a total of seven races, including two held in memory of past winners who have since passed away.
