A collection of life-sized animal puppets, which have been parading through various cities in Africa, is set to arrive in London next month.
This public art initiative aims to draw attention to the animals migrating northward to escape the climate crisis, according to The Walk Productions, known for their large-scale artistic endeavors.
THE HERDS will journey through London from June 27 to 29, stopping at The Scoop as they progress from Soho to Somerset House, Coram’s Fields, Camden High Street, and Stratford.
The parade, which began on April 9 in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo, has already traveled through cities such as Lagos, Dakar, Marrakesh, Casablanca, and Rabat, engaging with local musicians, artists, dancers, and climate activists along the way.
These puppets are crafted from upcycled and recyclable materials, primarily utilizing cardboard and plywood, with an emphasis on biodegradable and organic options.
As the journey continues, the number and variety of animals represented will increase, showcasing species like elephants, giraffes, antelope, and lions.
The puppets will make their way through Europe, including stops in Madrid, Marseille, Venice, and Paris, before reaching the UK.
The stampede of THE HERDS will also incorporate performances, theatrical readings, and music as they travel, with a special event planned on Camden High Street.
Following their time in London, they will head north to Greater Manchester before continuing on to Scandinavia and ultimately the Arctic Circle.
Amir Nizar Zuabi, the artistic director, expressed, “THE HERDS is a pressing artistic response to the climate emergency, a vibrant and dynamic call for action traversing continents.
“Through the beauty and power of these life-sized figures, we seek to ignite conversation, provoke reflection, foster engagement, and inspire meaningful change.”
