This weekend, Trafalgar Square will host a complimentary festival that honors Black culture and creativity, emphasizing the vibrant nightlife of London.
Kicking off at noon and running until 6:00 PM BST, Black On The Square will offer an array of free live performances, dance showcases, delectable food options, and family-friendly activities.
This year’s theme, ‘Inter-generate’, highlights the significant role of Black Londoners in the realm of electronic music culture.
Among the featured acts is the iconic Garage music DJ and producer, Wookie.
The initial lineup includes the well-known DJ collective Born N Bread from south-east London, who will be managing the main stage.
Visitors can explore a variety of Black-owned vendor stalls that will present an eclectic selection of international dishes and cultural experiences, with contributors like Gloria Bros and Adrian’s Island Fresh.
Attendees will have the opportunity to savor everything from traditional Caribbean offerings and West African vegan dishes to seafood delights and plant-based desserts. Additionally, artisan vendors will showcase an array of jewelry, artwork, literature, home goods, and fashion items.
A special “Accra to London” stall will display an assortment of products inspired by Ghana’s capital, following the mayor’s recent trip to Accra as part of an important trade mission to Ghana, Nigeria, and South Africa.
In addition to its focus on music and culinary delights, the event will also highlight Black entrepreneurship, with assistance from London and Partners’ Grow London Local, offering walk-in advisory sessions for startups and small businesses.
There will also be a designated area created for children’s activities.
Kojo Marfo, vice chair of the City Hall Cultural Advisory Group, expressed, “As a Ghanaian-born British Londoner, this is a moment of great pride that showcases the multicultural essence of our city, and I am thrilled to witness this celebration come to fruition.”
