A statue honoring Shah Rukh Khan, the “King of Bollywood,” alongside his co-star Kajol, is set to be unveiled in Leicester Square, London, later this year.
This unveiling celebrates three decades of the iconic Indian film, Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, which features both stars and has become the longest-running film in the history of Indian cinema.
The statue will be installed alongside other celebrated figures, including Harry Potter, Gene Kelly from Singin’ in the Rain, Mary Poppins, and Batman, as part of the Scenes in the Square attraction.
Mark Williams, the deputy chief executive of the Heart of London Business Alliance, remarked that it’s “fantastic” to include these “titans of international cinema” in the trail.
He noted that Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge holds a prestigious place in Bollywood history, being one of the most significant and successful films ever made.
Mr. Williams also mentioned that this film is the first to represent Leicester Square within the trail.
Often referred to as the Romeo and Juliet of Bollywood, the film narrates the romantic journey of Raj and Simran, traversing through Europe and India, with its start on a train departing from King’s Cross station.
Akshaye Widhani, CEO of Yash Raj Films—producers of the 1995 classic—expressed, “This statue will showcase the global allure of Indian cinema and foster connections between diverse communities through film.”
The Scenes in the Square initiative in Leicester Square is managed by the Heart of London Business Alliance, with backing from Westminster City Council.
