Gasoline Crisis Hits Kuril Islands Amidst Widespread Fuel Shortages in Russia

Officials in parts of the Kuril Islands in Russia’s Far East announced on Monday that they have run out of gasoline. This shortage is being attributed by some to Ukrainian drone attacks on oil refineries as well as increased demand over the summer.

Konstantin Istomin, the head of the Kurilsk District, stated, “The sale of AI-92 gasoline to the public is currently suspended. The entire supply is required for special vehicles.” This announcement came just five days after a limit of 10 liters (2.6 gallons) per customer was put in place on the islands.

Istomin assured residents that he would notify them when gasoline sales could resume.

The southern part of the Kurilsk district, situated around 120 kilometers (75 miles) northeast of Japan’s Hokkaido prefecture, has been particularly affected.

Additionally, neighboring areas such as the Primorye region are experiencing shortages, leading to long queues at gas stations over the weekend. Restrictions have also been implemented in the Zabaikalsky region and in the annexed Crimea due to similar shortages.

Wholesale gasoline prices have surged to all-time highs this month, following drone strikes that incapacitated several major refineries. The Kremlin initially placed a temporary ban on gasoline exports through August to manage supply levels and extended it into September.

Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak met with leaders of major oil companies on Monday to address the ongoing shortages, as reported by the Interfax news agency, although details from that meeting have yet to be disclosed.
