FSB Uncovers Alleged Ukrainian-Backed Plot to Assassinate Russian Defense Executive with Car Bomb

On Thursday, Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) announced the arrest of three individuals believed to have attempted to assassinate a defense industry executive using a car bomb in St. Petersburg.

According to the FSB, all three suspects are Russian nationals and allegedly operated under the guidance of a handler linked to a “Ukrainian terrorist organization” purportedly supervised by Kyiv’s military intelligence.

The agency noted that two of the suspects were responsible for monitoring the target, conducting reconnaissance at his residence, and delivering the explosive device from a stash located in one of St. Petersburg’s cemeteries.

The FSB did not disclose the identity of the defense executive or the company associated with him.

A video released by the FSB depicted one of the alleged conspirators—a man disguised as an elderly woman—attempting to avoid detection while walking through St. Petersburg. The agency stated that he was apprehended after planting a bomb beneath the defense executive’s vehicle. Additionally, two young women featured in the video described how they tracked the executive’s activities.

During the video, the trio claimed to have “voluntarily joined a Ukrainian terrorist organization” the previous summer. The formal tone of their statements raised suspicions that they may have been coerced into making those confessions.

It remains impossible to independently verify the FSB’s assertions or determine whether the arrested individuals were compelled to speak against their will.

The FSB indicated that the suspects face serious charges, including terrorism, treason, and unlawful possession of explosives.
