On Wednesday, Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) announced that its officers shot and killed a man who was allegedly plotting to detonate a railway bridge in the southern Saratov region.
The individual, whose identity has not been disclosed, reportedly opened fire on FSB agents while trying to obtain an 11-kilogram (24-pound) explosive device. In response, the agents returned fire, resulting in his death, according to the FSB.
The agency stated that the man was a Russian national who had been in contact with individuals in Ukraine, and he allegedly intended to join the Ukrainian military after carrying out the sabotage of the railway bridge.
The Moscow Times was unable to independently confirm the FSB’s statements.
A video released by state media showed a man arriving in a village by vehicle, along with thermal imagery that seemed to depict a gunfight and an explosion in a forested area. The footage also included images of the railway bridge and a container that was reportedly filled with a flammable substance, which was said to be part of the foiled attack.
Authorities have initiated an investigation into the illegal possession and trafficking of explosives. The FSB indicated that the event might be classified as an attempted act of terrorism.
