Russian law enforcement officials announced on Wednesday the apprehension of a 24-year-old suspect accused of detonating a soldier’s vehicle under the guidance of Ukrainian operatives.
According to the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB), the arrested individual was involved in gathering intelligence about a defense facility in the Altai region of Siberia. He allegedly ignited a vehicle adorned with pro-war insignia and constructed two homemade explosive devices.
One of these explosives was reportedly utilized to destroy the car belonging to an active-duty Russian serviceman in Naro-Fominsk, located about 70 kilometers (43 miles) southwest of Moscow.
Irina Volk, a spokesperson for the Russian Interior Ministry, indicated that the car’s owner was currently “in the zone of the special military operation,” implying that there were no casualties or injuries as a result of the purported attack.
Both Volk and the FSB asserted that the detained man had communicated with a Ukrainian handler through social media to receive his orders.
A video released by state news agencies depicted the moment of arrest, including the suspect’s claim that he was paid at least 160,000 rubles (approximately $1,900) for the explosion.
The footage also showed agents examining a parked vehicle that exhibited damage consistent with an explosion.
The 24-year-old suspect could face a maximum of 20 years in prison on terrorism charges.
The FSB has indicated plans to pursue additional counts of treason and illegal possession of explosives, which could lead to a life sentence if he is convicted.
