Four-time Grand Slam champion and the world’s second-ranked player, the Italian tennis player Jannik Sinner, shared his thoughts on the physical challenges he faced during his third-round match at the 2026 Australian Open. He triumphed over American Eliott Spizzirri with a score of 4:6, 6:3, 6:4, 6:4.
— At the start of the third set, you were broken and found yourself down 1:3. It seemed like you were experiencing cramps. What were you feeling? What was on your mind?
— I was thinking about many things. It started in my leg and then spread to my arms, leading to cramps all over my body. That’s part of the sport. I recognize it’s an area where I need to improve. On the bright side, it’s something we can work on daily. I have a fantastic team behind me pushing me in the right direction. Moreover, tennis is a highly mental game. I try to remain as calm as possible. I’m here to compete and give my best. Today’s outcome reflected that: even when I’m not at my peak level, I strive to give it my all… with all your support, guys… you provided me with incredible encouragement. That means a lot to me.
— Will you now be requesting the roof be closed for every match?
— I have a decent track record on indoor courts (laughs). That would be fantastic for me. At the same time, I understand that if I want to progress far in this tournament, I must also compete in the heat. It’s not just here; it’s for the entire season. It’s great that I have at least one more match here. We will aim to give our all. Right now, the priority is to recover and prepare for the next match. Thank you once again, — Sinner concluded in his on-court interview.
